    Understanding the interrelationships between urban spaces and buildings, within overheating cities

    This chapter explores the dynamic interplay between buildings, urban spaces, and climate change, focusing primarily on examples from European and South American cities. The impact of urban environments on the energy performance of buildings is analysed, and how urban form affects microclimates at various scales - from street level to district and city-wide scale - is investigated. Urban and building design features that significantly influence urban microclimates are examined, especially concerning their role in shaping indoor and outdoor climates. Further, the crucial role of urban form and layout in enhancing the climate resilience of cities is considered. The relationship between urban heat and global climate change is evaluated within the context of building design. The need to enhance passive cooling techniques is stressed to reduce reliance on air conditioning, a practice that contributes to a vicious cycle of warming. This chapter's overall objective is to clarify the critical links between urban physics and the design of buildings and urban spaces. The importance of architects and engineers developing a thorough understanding of urban climate dynamics is emphasised, as such knowledge is crucial for developing effective, sustainable solutions for urban environments facing the challenges of a changing climate.
