In Chile: An Analysis of the Republican Party(Springer Nature, 2025-06-03) Bustamante-Olguín, Fabián GasparThe rapid rise of radical right parties in Europe and Latin America has garnered significant attention in academia due to their electoral successes and influence on policy formulation. However, defining the “radical right” poses challenges due to diverse interpretations among scholars, resulting in various terms like “right-wing populism,” “extreme right,” or “radical nationalism.” Despite this diversity, the rise of the radical right is marked by nationalist discourse, anti-immigration stances, and conservative values, with some advocating protectionist economic policies. Recent developments in Latin America, such as Jair Bolsonaro's government in Brazil and the emergence of the Republican Party in Chile, underscore the growing influence of the radical right in the region. This article aims to investigate whether the Republican Party in Chile aligns with the radical right, drawing on a review of specialized literature and theoretical perspectives from both European and Chilean contexts. It argues that the party represents a unique form of radical right, merging Chilean extreme right traditions with Chicago gremialismo, and blurring the lines between mainstream right-wing and radical right ideologies. The methodology involves analyzing secondary data and theoretical approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of the radical right phenomenon. The chapter begins with a bibliographic review of the radical right phenomenon in Western Europe, followed by an exploration of its distinctions from the extreme right. It then assesses whether conceptual frameworks from European contexts can elucidate the rise of the Republican Party in Chile.
